Need a good canning book for X-Mas gift

Yeah yeah... I know, little late to be asking.

I need a good generic "How to" canning book that will be easy to locate at one of the large chain bookstores. Barnes and Nobel, Boarders etc.... Any recommendations?

I have a little breathing room, don't need to have it until 5pm est today! :bear_rolleyes:

CB,

Was in B&N the other day getting a how to sushi book for the gf and was scanning through some of the canning books. IMO the book from Ball, the same guys as the jars, had a pretty good book. Over 400 recipes, everything from meats, veggies, fish, fruit...think it was about $25FRNs.

GOOD LUCK FIGHTIN THE MASSES....

Ball blue book is THE starter book. Most other books reference the Ball blue book in some way... it is known as the canning bible.

It it usually available at Wal-Mart, and book stores.

Other books to look for:

Ball COMPLETE book of home preserving

Keeping the harvest

And

Better homes and gardens, Canning and Preserving Recipes

PS>> I like the Ball recipes and instruction the best.

I'll second that. I use this book sometimes just for the recipes whether I'm canning or not. Earlier this week I used their recipe for split pea soup -- secret ingredient, Allspice. Delicious.

Just picked it up.... Perfect!! I won't get into the disorder of The Barnes and Nobel store, but I managed to harness enough employee IQ points to find what I was looking for!!

Thank you!!

Good Luck with the canning...I plan on picking up the same book next week

Tried out some blueberry jam this past weekend and salsa last night...both look really good, but I give you the taste report after Christmas...

Merry Christmas to you and yours and best wishes for a great new year!!!(Hopefully TSHTF later rather than sooner):thumb.aspx:

At least you don't call it "jaring" like some of the folks around here.

Sometimes when we are dry canning beans and such, it certainly feels like jarring and not canning.....
